Programs of JSPS(Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) for Foreign Researchers

JSPS

●Postdoctoral Fellowships (Standard) [P]

Purpose: Accepting foreign young researchers immediately after getting a doctoral degree to Japanese universities etc. for up to two years.
Status: 1. Those having a doctor's degree at the start of research in Japan and less than 6 years after obtaining a doctor's degree as of Apr 1, 2019.
            2. Those who have previously been awarded a fellowship under the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Foreign Researchers
                 (excluding the Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (Standard) and Summer Program) are not eligible.
Required documents: Application form, Letter of Recommendation written and signed by the candidate’s doctoral supervisor etc.

Acceptance notification: Dec 2019
Start date: Apr 1 - Sep 30, 2020 ( Applicant can decide)
Postdoc term: 12 to 24 months
[Second term]
Application deadline: Apr 6, 2020*
Acceptance notification: Aug 2020
Start date: Sep 1 - Nov 31, 2020 ( Applicant can decide)
Postdoc term: 12 to 24 months

●Postdoctoral Fellowships (Short-term) [PE]

Purpose: To provide opportunities for pre-/post-doctoral researchers from the US, Canada and Europe to conduct, under the guidance of their hosts, cooperative research
                 with leading research groups in universities and other Japanese institutions.
Status: 1. USA, Canada, EU, Switzerland, Norway, Russia who have nationality or permanent residency.
                 However, after acquiring a master 's degree or higher in other countries, those who have continued research for more than 3 years at the time of application,
                 including those who have excellent research achievements in the countries listed earlier.
            2. Those who have previously been awarded a fellowship under the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Foreign Researchers (excluding the Postdoctoral
                 Fellowship Program (Standard and Short-term) and Summer Program) are not eligible.
Required documents: Application form, Letter of Recommendation written and signed by the candidate’s doctoral supervisor etc.

●Invitational Fellowships (Long-term) [L]

Purpose: To invite foreign professor of professorial level from the middle level for a relatively long time and to provide opportunities to cooperate with Japanese researchers
                 to conduct research
Status: 1. Those who have nationality or permanent residence of a country that has exchanges with Japan.
             2. A full-time researcher who belongs to a foreign university or research institution, as of Apr 1, 2019, the equivalent of Japan university professors,
                 associate professors, and assistants.
             3. Those who have excellent research achievements.
Required information: Higher education, previous employment, outline of research, research achievements, awards, and purpose and effect of invitation
[First term]
Application deadline: Aug 1, 2019*
Acceptance notification: Dec 2019
Start date: Apr 1, 2020 - Mar 31, 2021 ( Applicant can decide)
Term: 2 to 10 months

●Invitational Fellowships (Short-term) [S]

Purpose: To contribute to the development of research in the relevant field through the short-term invited of professors, and through discussions, exchange of opinions,
                 and lectures with researchers in Japan.
Status: 1. Those who have nationality or permanent residence of a country that has exchanges with Japan.
             2. A full-time researcher who belongs to a foreign university or research institution, as of Apr 1, 2019, the equivalent of Japan university professors and
                 associate professors.
             3. Those who have excellent research achievements.
Required information: Higher education, previous employment, outline of research, research achievements, awards, and purpose and effect of invitation

Start date: Apr 1, 2020 - Mar 31, 2021 ( Applicant can decide)

●Invitational Fellowships (Short-term S) [E]

Purpose: To provide opportunities for invited, lectures, and research guidance to foreign researchers who are currently in a position of leadership in the field,
                with exceptional performance and award-winning achievements of the Nobel Prize class.
Status: 1. Those who have nationality or permanent residence of a country that has exchanges with Japan.
             2. Those who have an exceptional research achievement, such as a Nobel Prize winner of an international prize, and are currently in a position of leadership in the field.
Required information: Higher education, previous employment, outline of research, research achievements, purpose and effect of invitation, awards, and outline of awards

Collaborative Research Projects of IFS

●General Collaborative Research Project

Purpose: 1. General collaborative research: a collaborative research project between IFS's researcher(s) and other institute's researcher(s) utilizing IFS's research facilities.
                2. Conferential collaborative research: a meeting to share ideas and promote collaborative research.
Status: Researchers, technical general staff, graduate students etc. other than IFS.
Term: Apr 1, 2019 - Mar 31, 2020 (Possible to continue to 3 years)

●International Multiple Collaborative Research Project

Purpose: Collaborative research project between IFS's researcher(s) and other multiple overseas research institutes' researchers utilizing IFS's research facilities.
Status: Researchers, technical general staff, graduate students etc. other than IFS.
Term: Apr 1, 2019 - Mar 31, 2020 (Possible to continue to 3 years)
Application method: Electronic application
Application deadline: Jan 18, 2019

●Special International Collaborative Research Project

Purpose: Collaborative research project between IFS’s researcher(s) and other overseas institute’s researcher who has promoted important, creative and advanced research,
                and will stay more than a month in IFS, utilizing IFS’s research facilities.
Status: Foreign researchers, technical general staff, graduate students etc. other than IFS.
Term: Apr 1, 2019 - Mar 31, 2020

●Priority Collaborative Research Project

Purpose: Collaborative research project between IFS’s researchers and other multiple research institutes’ researchers utilizing IFS’s research facilities.
                The aim of this project is to find solutions to various problems facing society. The IFS accepts one application at most from each Cluster.
Status: Researchers, technical general staff, graduate students etc. of several research institutes other than IFS.
Term: Apr 1, 2019 - Mar 31, 2020 (Possible to continue to 3 years)

●LyC Collaborative Research Project

Purpose: collaborative research project between IFS’s researcher(s) and other institute’s researcher(s) utilizing IFS’s research facilities (located in Katahira campus and Lyon campus). At Lyon Center which was established in 2018, IFS faculty members and graduate students stay at Université de Lyon in France (INSA de Lyon, École Centrale de Lyon) together as a unit and promote its collaborative research.
Status: Researchers, technical general staff, graduate students etc. of several research institutes other than IFS.
Term: Apr 1, 2019 - Mar 31, 2020
